Digital Mammography at Pasco Regional Medical Center

At Pasco Regional Medical Center, you have access to the latest diagnostic mammography technology available.  Pasco Regional Medical Center's digital mammography system helps detect and diagnose breast cancer earlier and more accurately than a traditional mammogram.  Breast cancer strikes about one of every eight American women.  Digital mammography plays a key role in early detection.  It is recommended that women age 40 and older have an annual  mammogram. You should have one sooner if you have a family history of breast cancer.

Digital mammography is a fast, simple procedure that utilizes extremely low dosages of radiation to screen for breast cancer.  Through the use of screening, breast cancer can be found years before it is detected by a self-breast examination or by a physician's exam.  Eighty percent of all breast lumps are non-cancerous.  Digital mammography helps distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous lumps.

Women who have routine mammograms at Pasco Regional Medical Center have access to the latest diagnostic techniques with full field digital mammography.  This system helps physicians detect and diagnose breast cancer earlier and more accurately.

There are two types of mammograms -- screening and diagnostic

Screening mammograms are for women who have no signs of breast problems.  These screenings will require a physician's order/prescription.  Women appropriate for screening mammograms are those with no breast complaints, who are at least 35 years of age, who are not pregnant, and who have not had a mammogram during the past year.

Diagnostic mammograms are for women who have suspicion regarding a breast problem, such as lump or nipple discharge.  Women with such concerns should see their physician who will order a diagnostic mammogram.  Diagnostic mammograms must have a physician's order.

What to Expect During Your Digital Mammogram

Upon arrival at Pasco Regional Medical Center, you will be asked to complete a brief history form.  Your nurse will discuss the procedure you are about to undergo and answer any questions you may have.

During the actual digital mammogram, you will be asked to sit or stand, whichever position provides the best picture of your breasts.  Breasts are positioned and compressed to expose as much tissue as possible.  The only discomfort that may be felt will be the gentle pressure to the breast during positioning.

A Radiologist will review your film and the results will be sent to your referring physician within ten working days.  If an abnormality is detected, further diagnostic testing may be recommended.  This may include diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound or biopsy.

Appointments for a digital mammogram are available within two days by calling our One Call Scheduling Specialist at (352) 521-1592NOTE:  A physician's prescription will be required in order to schedule your appointment.
