Pasco Regional is a Designated Primary Stroke Center
The Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) designated Pasco Regional Medical Center as a Primary Stroke Center in January 2010. AHCA utilizes a rigorous set of criteria for primary stroke center designation such as having a multi-disciplinary acute stroke team available 24/7 to care for patients, advanced diagnostic capabilities, and a working relationship with stroke trained emergency responders.
Time is of the essence in caring for stroke patients. The faster patients can be treated, the better the chance for a full recovery. If you think someone is having a stroke, think
FAST, and look for these physical symptoms:
- Face - facial numbness, uneven smile or droopiness (especially on only one side)
- Arm - arm or leg numbness, weakness or an inability to walk
- Speech - sudden speech impairments, slurring or the inability to speak or understand
- Time - Time is critical. Call 911 to ensure your loved one receives immediate medical attention
ER Wait Time Text Capability
Pasco Regional Medical Center is proud to offer ER wait times directly to your phone as part of a suite of tools designed to ensure your patient experience in our ER is extra fast and extra easy.

If you have an iPhone, you can download an ER Extra iPhone app to access our ER wait times. In addition to our wait time, this app will give you a map, link to the hospital Web site and phone number of the nearest Health Management hospital. The ER Extra iPhone app can be downloaded for free at the iTunes app store, and can also be used on the iPad.
Please note: This is not a subscription service, so your personal information will not be captured.

Priority of Care - Our Goal is No Wait Time
We understand that no one wants to wait in an emergency situation. We have provided the information below to help you understand how emergency treatment is given and the order in which it is administered. We hope this will make your ER visit less anxious and confusing.
- Occasionally, you may observe patients who arrived in the emergency room after you, yet were called back to the treatment area ahead of you. Please understand, there are reasons for such occasions, including:
- Critical patients, regardless of arrival mode, will always be given priority.
- Patients arriving by ambulance will be given priority if that patient's emergency needs are more critical than those of patients in the ER lobby waiting to be seen.
- Certain types of illnesses or accidents require the use of a special room. It may be necessary to wait until this room is available, i.e., cuts are sutured under special lights, pelvic examinations are done in the GYN room.
Quality ER Care Takes Time
- To ensure you are fully evaluated, the emergency room physician will give you a thorough examination, and may order diagnostic testing or consult with your primary care physician. While testing is given full attention and will be completed “STAT” – that is, as fast as possible – there are factors that could create some waiting time. Rest assured, while you wait, you will be under observation by the nursing staff. Please keep in mind, there are additional "time-consumers" to consider:
- Laboratory work and other tests take time to be processed and evaluated.
- X-rays must be developed and read by a physician.
- Following treatment, you may be detained so the ER staff can observe the effectiveness of treatment.
- Consulting physicians most often respond to the emergency department from their private offices outside the hospital.
- If the decision is made to admit you, additional paperwork must be completed and time is needed to help the hospital unit prepare a room especially for you. Once your test results are back, your emergency room physician will review and discuss the results with you. Your physician will go over how your illness or injury should be treated.
Before You Leave The Hospital
Before you are discharged, your nurse will return to review your discharge instructions, give you prescriptions, if needed, and answer your questions. You will be asked to sign your chart to indicate that you understand your discharge instructions. No question is too silly to ask. Your health care is too important to worry about being embarrassed if you do not understand something your doctor, nurse or other health care professional tells you. Please ask them to explain again if you do not understand.
You will also be given the name of a staff physician to see by appointment if your diagnosis requires a follow-up visit. Once you have received this information and have no further questions, you are ready to go home.
Thank you for choosing ER Extra at Pasco Regional Medical Center for your emergency care needs. It is a privilege to provide quality ER care to you and your family in a fast and courteous manner.
