Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery Minimally Invasive SurgeryServices

Pasco Regional Medical Center is proud to once again be on the forefront of an emerging minimally-invasive surgical technique - Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS™).  PRMC was the first hospital in Pasco County to offer single incision laparoscopic surgery using the Covidien SILS™.   The pioneer surgery was a LAP-BAND® procedure – an adjustable gastric band for weight loss – performed by renowned bariatric surgeon Dr. Lee Grossbard in April, 2009. Chief of Surgery Dr. P. Krishnaraj was the first surgical specialists at PRMC to adopt the SILS technique for the majority of his surgical patients.

The SILS™ procedure offers the patient an even less invasive alternative to the traditional laparoscopic surgery.  This revolutionary procedure utilizes one single incision point through the patient’s umbilicus, or belly button, ultimately resulting in the potential for no visible scar. By comparison, traditional laparoscopic cholecystectomies involve up to four ½-inch or smaller incisions that may leave scars. As with any laparoscopic procedure, SILS™ technology also provides patients with a faster recovery time and less postoperative pain versus traditional open surgery.

The SILS™ procedure is used for many laparoscopic surgeries including hernia repair, cholecystectomy (also know as gallbladder removal), various gynecological procedures, among other areas.  If you are facing a possible surgery, speak to your surgeon to see if Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery is right for you.
