Minimally Invasive Surgery Services

Pasco Regional Medical Center prides itself on being a leader in minimally invasive surgeries (also known as laparoscopic surgery).  PRMC has been at the forefront of many advances in minimally invasive surgeries, including laparoscopic hysterectomy, LAP-Band®, the ROSE® and Single Incision Laparoscopy.  Additionally, PRMC is currently conducting an FDA clinical trial to evaluate a non-surgical bariatric procedure, know as the BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB®).

Surgeons at PRMC frequently use minimally-invasive procedures as an alternative to traditional open surgery. For the patient, a minimally-invasive surgery, sometimes referred to as ‘keyhole’ surgery, means small surgical scars, less trauma to the body, and often a quicker recovery time and shortened hospital stay.

PRMC surgeons use a range of minimally invasive surgical technologies including laparoscopy, single-incision laparoscopy, and even incisionless surgery – using natural orifice surgical technology.  All of these minimally invasive techniques provide the patient with the advantages of a possible faster recovery time, and little to no scarring as a result of smaller incisions.

Laparoscopic surgery is performed through up to four small incisions, which are each no more than half-an inch.  Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery is done through one small incision made in the umbilicus (naval). Using specialized techniques, miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiber-optic flashlights and high definition monitors, surgeons in many specialties can perform surgery through an incision that requires only a stitch or two to close.

Incisionless surgery is performed through one of the body’s natural orifices to eliminate external incisions.  Currently, at PRMC incisionless surgery is performed endolumenally (through the mouth and into the stomach) to perform the ROSE® procedure for gastric bypass repair.  This technology does have other applications, which PRMC is currently reviewing.
